Crieff & Strathearn Junior Rugby

16 February 2010

Crieff Junior Rugby Visits Blair

Despite the vagaries afflicting Crieff’s senior rugby performances , the success and enthusiasm in the Club’s junior ranks was emphasised last Sunday when a large contingent headed to Blairgowrie to compete in an excellent day’s rugby .

The younger guys – the Braidhawks were in contest with  their counterparts from Glkenrothes , Panmure and Blair . .Due to a request from their hosts Crieff played with two teams at P4/P5 and two at P6/P7 level. The P4/P5 teams had a great day out and won every game they took part in, some by a considerable margin. Their coaches MUST be doing something right!

The P6/P7 teams, despite having some players missing, played with great
determination and their tackling was excellent. Their games were well
contested and everyone came away well satisfied with their performance.
This week we are getting back to normal with a training session at the
normal time.

In the older matches , Crieff’s S1/2 squad  with a few key players not
available put in a creditable performance against a strong Blairgowrie side which contained some very large and powerful runners.  Relentless aggression and opportunism from captain Matthew Tait and high impact running from Michael Galloway kept Crieff in a bruising 60 minute game, with tries for both, before Crieff finally conceded by four tries to eight . This was indeed an encouraging and strong performance by the Braidhaugh fledglings and augurs well for the return encounter on home soil on the 28th of February

It should be mentioned that the  previous week that one of the real success stories , the Clubs new S3/4 squad ruffled more than a few feathers with a dynamic win 34 – 29 over their more experienced Clackmannan counterparts in a strenuous hard fought encounter .

This weekend with a respite from the Six Nations on the cards , the S3./4s play host on Sunday morning to Strathendrick in what promises to be another cracker . The team should meet at the Clubhouse at 11 am for an 11.30 kick off . The S1/2s travel to McKane Park Dunfermline in what should be yet another one savour .

Win Away For S3/S4 s

Strathendrick  0  Crieff & Strathearn   12

The S3/4 players are coming of age- a great performance from the whole team produced a 12-0 win away against Strathendrick.

A strong performance from the pack secured plenty of good ball for the backs to play with throughout the whole game.
The front row consisting of Callum Coutts, Graeme Roy and Matthew McMillan were good in the set piece and did a lot of the hard graft to secure some good ball. The second row of Steven McGarey and pack leader Angus Cramb were superb with some outstanding bursting runs- a potent combination. A lot of hard tackling and good rucking underpinned a very good performance from the back row consisting of Fraser Ford, Conor McKay and Dougie Miller. The half back partnership of captain Chris Bendall and Ben Vardi was just superb. Ben setting up and finishing the first try early in the first half then coolly converting the extra two points. A few minutes later- Chris showed a good lively rugby brain to take advantage of some Strathendrick ill discipline to take a quick tap penalty and dive over for a well taken but unconverted try in the corner. This proved to be the last score in a hard fought encounter which was an excellent advert for junior rugby at both clubs. Some fantastic attacking rugby from a very secure centre partnership of Craig Moffat and Fraser MacLarty kept the Strathendrick backs on their toes. Great  performances from Conal Grieve on the wing and Jack Hendry rounded off a fantastic win- one to be proud of. The future of the clubs senior section is in very safe hands with this squad of players.

Well Done S1 /S2s !!

Our S1/2 squad put in their best display of the season so far to beat a very good Linlithgow side 23-3 at home yesterday.

The team was John Morton, Tom Wake, Tom Clark, Mark Caskie, James McLean, George Lowe, John McFarlane, Michael Galloway, Dhillon Clarke, Ruaridh Lauchlan, Calum Prentice, Andrew Conaboy, Charlie Grimson, David Donaldson and Sandy Fraser.

Although there were great individual performances what was so pleasing was the performance from the team. There was not one weak link in a very strong team. They were strong in all departments with the forwards technique in the scrums, lineouts and particularly the loose with great continuity/offloading and for once some good rucking!. The backs structure in the first third of the game was great- with good use of the attacking line and good overall structure producing some excellent tries. A great display - starting to show massive movement away from mini rugby into a better structured senior game. Well done guys- the coaches are proud of you!!

 Big Day At The Braidhaugh

S1 /S2 Entertain Perthshire

Last Sunday saw the newly formed Crieff & Strathearn S1 & S2 boys take up their first real rugby challenge as they entertained local rivals Perthshire at the Braidhaugh . With over 60 players now joined up , Junior rugby at the Braidhaugh has certainly taken off with a real bang . In a display of some fine rugby , the combined S1/S2 squad overcame their Perthshire opponents by the comfortable margin of two tries and two conversions to nil . Their junior compatriots,  the S1s found themselves up against more experience opponents . In a fine open game , the boys displayed a lot of skills ,determination and hard  endeavour in a closely fought encounter before going down by three tries and two conversions . This was a great afternoon and with Crieff Development Officer , Peter Cook having lined up some great fixtures , the young Braidhaugh warriors can look forward eagerly to a fascinating inaugural season . Not to be outdone , Crieff Girls Rugby has started up again at the Braidhaugh . Under the able coaching of Liz McKinney ( ex Army and Ulster ) and Chris Warburton all girls from S1 to S6 from any school are invited to join in .Training is at the Braidhaugh every Sunday from 12.30 until 2 pm .

The highlight for all the young players was the presence of former Crieff & Strathearn player Jason Hill  . Jason a member of the Blue and Golds , Murrayfield Plate team a few seasons back now plies his trade with Heriots in the Premiership .The Scotland Under 20 Internationalist spent a lot of time with the players and after posing for the photo shoot , announced that he is presenting to the Junior Section one of his International jerseys .Jason’s has  a bright rugby career ahead and takes with him ,  the warmest best wishes of his young Braidhaugh fans .

Next week the S1 /S2 Boys head for Glenrothes with a 12.30 kick off . The fixture for the S3/S4 Boys against Clackmannan has had to be postponed as their opponents have now to play a Cup match . There will be training ( 1230 – 2.00 ) at the Braidhaugh instead .

What a great start to the season !

Superb Win Over Strathendrick

The outstanding achievement of the week end must go to the recently established S3/ S4 squad whose initial game was against a well established Strathendrick outfit from Fintry near Balfron .Strathendrick arrived at the Braidhaugh with a small squad with four regional players in their midst.  The Crieff & Strathearn squad had looked sound in recent training but this was to be a test of their efforts.  The squad of 22 boys played four 15min spells which gave all a chance to show their ability while hopefully not disturbing continuity.  Angus was Captain who led by example playing the whole game and ably supported by his second row partner Robert.

It was clear from the start that the Strathendrick backs were very talented as every time they got the ball they ran hard at the home backs.  The coach was a little anxious but frankly he needn't have worried as both Craig and Ian were more than a match for their regional opponents and stopped the visitors attacking threat.  After a tense and hard fought 10mins it was Captain Angus who crashed over in the corner and this seemed to settle things.  Matt and Peter started making room and Steven was awesome with ball in hand running like a back and with real venom.

Gradually it became clear that, although both sets of forwards were very loose, the home eight were putting in heavy and hard tackles and the backs stopped the talented Starthendrick backs in their tracks.  The visitors never spent any time in the home 22m area and Crieff & Strathearn scored a try in each 15min part of the game.  Chris showed how quick witted he is with a dive on loose ball and Craig showed he was just as good from scrum half scoring the last try.  The pick of the tries was Blair's jinky move down the line after excellent interplay from James, Callum, Fraser and Dougie.

This is a very talented group of players who will move onto even greater displays if they continue to train hard and play with the commitment they displayed this Sunday.  Training is at 12.15 every Sunday when there is not a game.  Match and club details can be found on the Club web site http://crieffandstrathearnrfc.co.uk/juniorrugby.aspx

CRIEFF AND STRATHEARN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

Junior Rugby Section Policy

By registering their children to play or train with Crieff Junior Rugby, parents/guardians accept the following club policies.

1. Club Identity and Purpose

Crieff Junior Rugby is a section of Crieff and Strathearn Rugby Football Club.  Crieff Junior Rugby exists to promote the enjoyment of Rugby Football among children and young people in school ages up to S4.  The club coaches junior players of all ages and, in years P4 and over, organises them into teams to compete in the sport of Mini-Rugby (P4-P7) and Midi-Rugby (S1-S4), as defined by the SRU.   Crieff Junior Rugby is administered by a Coaching Committee.

The Club believes in competitive rugby, and children in years P4 and over will take part in matches with other clubs where there will be a winning and a losing side.

Players in school years P4 and over take part in contact Rugby.  Whilst the rules are designed with the safety of players as a paramount consideration, junior players will be participating in a very physical environment.  The rules of Mini- and Midi-rugby are available on the SRU website.

2. Correct Playing Age

Players are able to play in teams and attend coaching based on school year and not their age.  Players in school years P3 and below train with the Microbes Section.  Players in P4-P7 train and play matches in their respective year groups in the Mini-Rugby section.  Players in school years S1-S4 train and play matches in their respective year groups in the Midi-Rugby section.

3. Notification of Fixtures and Cancellations

Fixtures and training sessions will be advised via email and via the Rugby Club Information Hotline 07704 180974.  If parents give any member of the coaching team their email address, then notifications will be sent by email of fixtures and training.  We ask that parents/guardians correctly inform themselves by either of these two means.  Coaches will not be responsible for telephoning round to confirm that parents/guardians are correctly informed, but coaches will make their phone numbers available to parents/guardians on request to enable parents/guardians to check match and training session status in case of uncertainty.

In the cold or very wet weather, it is likely that some fixtures will be cancelled at short notice.  Whilst every effort will be made to provide 24 hours’ notice of cancellation, parents / guardians should check email by 9am or by telephoning the Rugby Club Hotline or the relevant coach on the morning of the game to avoid wasted journeys.

3. Club Playing Strip (for P4-S4 only)

The club provides players in P4-S4 with a Crieff Rugby shirt for each match, which should be returned to the coach responsible after the player has changed at the end of the match(es).  From time to time, an opportunity for junior players to purchase their own club shirt may be organised.

Junior players are asked to provide the remainder of the strip themselves, although any similar suitable clothing is fine.  The rest of the Crieff strip is navy rugby shorts, and blue and gold rugby/football socks.  These are standard items available from most sports shops.

For training sessions, any suitable clothing should be worn.

Junior players are advised to bear in mind that we often play in cold and wet conditions, and therefore they may wish to wear a wicking undershirt (not cotton) under their rugby shirt, and bring a warm waterproof top and tracksuit trousers to training sessions and matches

4. Team Selection

Crieff Junior Rugby does not as a rule select teams for matches based on ability and will provide any registered player of the correct age who has attended training and who arrives for a match with the opportunity to play.  The coach responsible for the team during the match will endeavour to provide game time for all players present, but this cannot be guaranteed and the substitution of players during a match is at the coach’s sole discretion.

However, depending on the number of players available to play, the coaches reserve the right to select the strongest team of players in advance, or to field an “A” team and a “B” team at each age group, based on experience, commitment to training and ability.

5. Subscriptions

Before the first training session or match of the season, (whichever the earlier) parents/guardians of players in P4-S4 will pay Crieff Junior Rugby subscriptions in full to the Club Treasurer.  Players who have not paid their subscriptions will not be allowed to train or play matches.  Subscriptions for the 2009/10 season are unchanged at 20 pounds for the whole season. For players joining the club from 1st January 2010, for the balance of the season, the subscription is reduced to 10 pounds.

For members of the senior club with children playing in the minis section, a Family Membership of 50 pounds is available that covers all members of your family.  This is payable to Lynda Lessels, Senior Club Treasurer.

Microbes (P3 and below) do not pay an annual subscription.  Instead, they are asked to bring one pound to each training session.

6. Disruptive Behaviour

Crieff Junior Rugby exists to promote the enjoyment of rugby among all its junior  members.  Where the behaviour of an individual junior player is affecting the enjoyment of the other junior players in the club, the Club will act in the interests of the majority of players.  Unreasonable behaviour by either players or parents will not be tolerated and very disruptive players who repeatedly spoil the enjoyment of others will be asked to leave the club.  In this case their membership subs will be refunded.

If parents/guardians feel their child needs additional support in this regard they are encouraged to be present during matches and training sessions.

7. Junior Player Welfare

7.1 Insurance

Crieff Junior Rugby players who have paid their subscriptions are insured under the SRU Insurance policy.  Parents/guardians hereby accept that the members of Crieff Junior Rugby Coaching Team or other Club Officials have no personal liability arising from the participation of junior players in training sessions or matches.

7.2 Gum Shields and Studs

The Club requires that Gum shields should be worn in any contact situation.

The Club insists that boots must have appropriate studs.  Combination metal / plastic studs or football studs are not acceptable for playing rugby because of the risk of injury to other players.  The club strongly prefers that boots have proper rugby studs.  Boots with blades may be acceptable depending on the design, and in this case the decision of the coach or referee in question is final.  Since other clubs we play against may have different policies, parents/guardians are advised that the safest course of action is to provide their children with boots with traditional rugby studs.

7.3 Medical Issues

Parents/Guardians hereby consent to their child receiving medical treatment, including anaesthetic, which the medical authorities present consider to be necessary, and agree to inform Crieff Junior Rugby should this consent change.

Parents/Guardians should advise Crieff Junior Rugby in writing at the start of the season of any relevant medical condition or allergy affecting their child

7.4 Child Protection

Crieff Junior Rugby has an active child protection policy, copies of which are available to all parents.

From time to time the club may take, or cause to be taken, photographic images of junior players.  If parents/guardians have any concerns about their children being photographed for this purpose then they must notify the club in writing at the beginning of the season.

7.5 Protection from Injury

Parents/guardians are advised the mini-rugby, as defined by the SRU, is a contact sport.  The specific rules of Mini Rugby and Midi Rugby are designed with the safety of junior players as a paramount consideration, and all matches are refereed by SRU-registered referees.

8. Data Protection

All information given by parents/guardians will be held on a secure database and will only be used to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for our junior players.

Parents / guardians hereby consent to basic information about their junior players (name and date of birth) being submitted by the club to the SRU for the purposes of maintaining the SRU’s statistics on Rugby in Scotland.

9. Maintenance of this Policy

This policy is developed and maintained by the Coaching Committee of Crieff Junior Rugby.  Members of the Coaching Committee are qualified SRU Rugby Coaches and members of Crieff and Strathearn Rugby Football Club, who have been proposed and elected by existing members of the Coaching Committee.  The Coaching Committee also elects individuals to positions of responsibility within the Club.  Any parent/guardian who wishes to complete the SRU Rugby Coaching Foundation Course may approach the Coaching Committee for election.  We would welcome your help.
